Background

The Charcoal Grill range is designed and engineered by FDBD Pty Ltd, trading as Fifteen Degrees by Design. It has taken over three years to develop, build and refine the product offering.

We started with small direct market sales. Over time, through a growing social media presence and reseller base, the increased exposure generated greater demand and confirmed what the market wanted.  This supported the rapid expansion of our high-end charcoal grill range.

It’s now time to take the charcoal grill project to the next level.

We have formed the Charcoal Grill Company Pty Ltd to take the Range into domestic and global markets.

The first stage is to continue building the Australian market, reduce manufacturing costs and refine the marketing processes. The aim is to build the financial capacity platform to go global.

History

Charcoal grilling has been used in Japan spanning 2,000 years.

My journey into charcoal cooking began in Tokyo several years ago.   My wife and I walked through a low curtained restaurant door, down two flights of stairs and into a pumping restaurant.

The waiters placed a charcoal-burning grill in front of us with a quartered cabbage. As they went past, we pointed to different produce, and on cooking, we experienced a new world of exotic food flavours produced by the charcoal grill.

I arrived home and designed my first charcoal grill, which forms the basis of our  Grill Range.

It had to be elegant and highly functional with better materials, better heat retention, better performance and, Made in Australia.

The new charcoal grill’s other critical points of difference were that it had to be robust, repairable and energy-efficient and be used at the table.

Our competitors have few of these features.

I started small scale production to test the market response to the Grills at the Noosa Farmers Market, selling to locals and visitors from all over Australia and New Zealand and into the restaurant market.

I expanded the product offering and added a steamer, smoker and oven attachments, and shortly afterwards, I expanded into a large commercial-sized grill with the same features.

The product range was on its way and being sold into some of Australia’s top restaurants and to dedicated home cooks.
